October 22, 2008
Dear Friends,
Conservation Hearing on October 28 in Jackson County
The Conservation and Water Resources Committee will hold a public meeting at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Jackson County Campus in the Lecture Hall of the Warner Peterson Administration Building from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 28. I hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to participate in a discussion of issues affecting our natural resources.
I want to thank Committee Chairman John Mayo for making Jackson County a major part of his committee’s Gulf Coast trip and the administration and faculty of MGCCC for hosting the public meeting.
Comprehensive Election Reform Review Panel
The Comprehensive Election Reform Review Panel, created by Senate Bill 2910 during the 2008 Legislative Session, completed the last of five public hearings on Mississippi’s election laws. The Panel’s meetings afforded panelists an opportunity to learn from local election officials and concerned citizens who have experienced, first hand, the practical application of Mississippi’s election laws. The Legislature owes a debt of gratitude to the officials and private citizens who participated in these forums.
My own study of Mississippi’s election laws has been greatly impacted by the work of a local Voter I.D. Study Committee which was formed following the 2008 Legislative Session. The passion and interest in Mississippi’s election laws exhibited by these individuals has reminded me of the importance of responsible lawmaking in the realm of voting.
The Secretary of State and his staff deserve credit for organizing and facilitating our meetings. Their work ensured that the panel heard from all interested parties in an orderly manner.
I also greatly appreciate the work of the individual panelists. Their insight and understanding of these important issues will no doubt prove helpful in considering upcoming legislation.
The Panel is required to issue a report in December. I will post this report when it becomes available.
