Update 77: Oil Spill Update
March 15, 2009
Dear Friends,
This week, the legislature welcomed Archie and Eli Manning to the Capitol in celebration of “Manning Day”. Both Mannings addressed the House and thanked the state for its support of their family. Archie was proud to announce, “I always tell people I am from Drew, Mississippi.” It was great to meet these great athletes and especially good to hear how strongly they feel about Mississippi.
I am very pleased that two of my bills have been approved in the Senate and are now on their way to the Governor’s desk for his consideration.
House Bill 1357 would include individuals who falsely claim to be a representative of an entity to open bank accounts and obtain credit cards under the identity theft statute.
House Bill 1362 would allow the Attorney General’s office to investigate and prosecute computer crimes involving children.
This week, House members tried to improve Mississippi’s poor teen driving record by extending the licensing age and banning cell phone texting for young drivers. The state ranks second in the U.S. in teenage driving deaths, and several tragic accidents have taken the lives of teenage drivers in recent years. Under House language inserted in Senate Bill 2280, a teenager who is at least 16 ˝ years of age (up from 16) and has held an intermediate license for six months without a violation may be issued a regular license. Most of the debate on the bill centered on the section that would prohibit 15 and 16 year old drivers from texting while driving. An initial fine would be $500 but $1,000 if it involved an accident. Many of the bills introduced by House and Senate members are now assigned to “conference”, which is a process that involves negotiations between three members of both chambers. These negotiations must be completed before the session ends on Saturday, April 4. Don’t forget that you can follow floor debates by going to www.mpbonline.org and clicking on “House video”. If you have any questions or concerns, I invite you to call me on my cell phone at 228-326-7649 or e-mail me at bjones@house.ms.gov. Please feel free to forward this report to folks in our district and let me know if I need to add someone to my list. I will also be posting my updates and House related news on my campaign website at www.electbrandonjones.com. Thank you for the opportunity to serve. BrandonHouse Web casting
