Update 79: Oil Spill Update - 100 Days

Jul 29, 2010

Dear Friend,

Oil Spill Update: Day 100

Operations continue at the former site of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig one hundred days after the explosion. Development Driller III has drilled the first relief well to a depth of 17,864 feet below the Gulf’s surface and Development Driller II has drilled the second relief well, a redundancy measure, to a depth of 15,963 feet below the surface. We will know more about the results of these wells in the coming days.

Among the items addressed in the Joint Information Center’s most recent update was an article on the $17.3 million in loans issued by the Small Business Administration for economic injuries related to the oil spill. As you know, many Mississippi families and small businesses turned to the S.B.A. for economic assistance in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Now, many of those same people are seeking S.B.A. loans for economic injuries caused by the BP oil spill.

While I am pleased to learn that residents of the Gulf Coast are receiving help during this difficult time, I do not believe that American taxpayers should be left with the bill. That is why this afternoon I have contacted several state and federal officials to ask that they join me in urging Congress to demand that BP pay off all loans issued by the S.B.A. as a result of the oil spill. Mississippi families and businesses should not be left struggling to pay off loans for losses caused by BP.

I would like to hear from you on this and other oil spill related topics. Now is the time to make our concerns known so that our ideas can be included in the recovery plan.
